Female researchers from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will brief the media on some of the ground-breaking research they are working on to improve the lives of South Africans.

The briefing, scheduled to take place at the CSIR campus in Pretoria, on Wednesday, 29 August 2018, will focus on some of the research breakthroughs in health sciences aimed at improving the state of health care in the country.

Senior researcher, Ghaneshree Moodley, will brief the media on the development of probiotics for use in the production of broiler chickens, dusky-cob and abalone. This will assist the country in the production of natural animal products, free of antibiotics, chemicals and growth stimulants.

Product development technician, Vivey Pasha, will focus on the development of skin care products, particularly the safety of ingredients that go into cosmetic products, such as lotions and soaps.

Emerging researcher, Valentine Saasa, will talk about the breath analyser nanotechnologies for disease detection. Saasa is one of the researchers who are working on a new device to detect acetone to monitor blood glucose levels without having to use needles and blood.

Dr Janine Scholefield, a senior researcher in synthetic biology, will give a status update on stem cell research. Dr Scholefield is using induced pluripotent stem cell models to study other African diseases, such as those caused by HIV, by looking at people with different susceptibility to the virus, including elite controllers.
