CSIR welcomes new Minister and Deputy Minister

CSIR welcomes Dr Bonginkosi “Blade” Nzimande and Mr Buti Manamela as the new Minister and Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, respectively, as appointed by President Cyril Ramphosa, on Wednesday, 29 May 2019.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) welcomes Dr Bonginkosi “Blade” Nzimande and Mr Buti Manamela as the new Minister and Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, respectively, as appointed by President Cyril Ramphosa, on Wednesday, 29 May 2019.

The Chairperson of the CSIR board, Prof Thokozani Majozi, says, “We welcome Minister Nzimande and Deputy Minister Manamela to the science and technology portfolio and we are looking forward to working together on realising the CSIR vision of accelerating socio-economic prosperity in South Africa through leading innovation”.

Dr Nzimande served as the Minister of Higher Education from 2009 to 2017, before being appointed to the Ministry of Transport in 2018. Mr Manamela has been serving as the Deputy Minister of Higher Education since 2017.

"We look forward to working with both the Minister and Deputy Minister as we continue to deliver on our mandate of improving the lives of our people through science, technology and Innovation,” says CSIR CEO, Dr Thulani Dlamini.

The CSIR would like to thank outgoing Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane and Deputy Minister Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi for their sterling leadership and commitment to the advancement of science and technology in South Africa.

During their tenure, the CSIR managed to finalise and roll out its new strategy, which aims to leverage its strong science, engineering and technology capabilities to respond to industrial development opportunities.

The CSIR wishes Minister Kubayi-Ngubane well in her new portfolio as the Minister of Tourism.
