For the Mandela Mining Precinct, the journey to mine modernisation has as its end goal, to develop shared value for all people in the modernising minerals sector.

To this end, the Precinct has developed a research programme that focuses solely on the role of people in a modernised mine in South Africa.

While South Africa is a mineral-rich country, its characteristic difficult geological features make it challenging to accommodate mechanisation. Research commissioned by the Mandela Mining Precinct has shown that mechanisation can be accommodated if conceptualised in the early stages of development. Through optimal shaft design, mines can produce higher volumes with a reduced labour bill and achieve increased efficiencies.

In the context of rising electricity costs and Eskom generation constraints, mining companies should be looking to diversify their energy supply through alternative self-generation technologies such as renewables.

This was the consensus reached by researchers commissioned by the Mandela Mining Precinct and tasked to develop, through directed research and development, an energy efficiency guideline for the industry.

Proposals are hereby invited for the following three separate and independent elements within the RISP:
 
A. Regional Innovation Networking platforms aimed at establishing networking platforms to bring together research, development and innovation communities, technology SMMEs, industry and government.
B. Feasibility study or business plan support for innovation enabling mechanisms such as:  a. Science and Technology Parks, Techno Parks, Innovation Hubs or other similar concepts. b. Other innovation enabling mechanisms and initiatives.
C. Innovation Baseline Studies to assess and analyse the status of Regional Innovation Systems (RISs), in a particular location, in terms of their effectiveness and readiness to promote and support innovation in the regions (including provinces and local municipalities). Read more...

CSIR experts, Dr Albert Lysko and Prof Luzango Mfupe recently participated in a South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) webinar to discuss the organisation’s research and innovation in Television Whitespaces (TVWS). The webinar, based on an article published in the SAIEE official magazine Watt Now was co-authored by CSIR Next Gen Enterprises and Institutions experts including Executive Manager Prof Fulufhelo Nelwamondo.
