South Africa’s statistics and data systems will take centre stage at an event scheduled to showcase the country’s statistical capacity in Pretoria on Friday, 19 October.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will host an open day to engage with stakeholders on the role and relevance of statistics, as well as the potential impact on South Africans.

South Africa’s statistics and data systems will take centre stage at an event scheduled to showcase the country’s statistical capacity in Pretoria on Friday, 19 October.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will host an open day to engage with stakeholders on the role and relevance of statistics, as well as the potential impact on South Africans.

The event forms part of World Statistics Day, an initiative of the United Nations to highlight the importance of reliable and timely data for informed decision-making. This year, the event will be held under the theme of Better data, better lives, emphasising the critical role of high-quality official statistical information in analysis and informed policy decision-making in support of sustainable development.

Some of the tools and models developed by the CSIR for spatial planning and monitoring and predicting trends for future planning will be on display at the event.

The event will be hosted jointly with the Institute of Certificated and Chartered Statisticians of South Africa (ICCSSA) - professional body for statisticians; Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA); South African Statistical Association (SASA); DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (CoE-MaSS); and Statistics Analysis System (SAS) - a statistical software company.

Dr Christine Khoza, the Chief Director of the Population Statistics Division at Statistics South Africa, will deliver the keynote address on plans for Census 2021: New strategies for data collection methodologies.
