On Monday, 27 June 2022, the Council for Scientific and Industrial research (CSIR) will host a virtual media briefing to celebrate young researchers who are championing research and technology development in the fields of water and energy.

The media briefing, which forms part of Youth Month celebrations, aims to showcase research projects that young researchers are working on to help solve some of South Africa’s energy and water issues, such as acid mines and invasive alien plants and their impact on water drainage, as well as the increase in water demand as the competition for water rises due to population growth, economic expansion and climate change.

Senior researcher Dr Jeffrey Baloyi (33) will be discussing the maximisation of acid mine drainage recovery values – from linear economy legacies to circular economy resources. CSIR acting research group leader for the energy industry Aradhna Pandarum (31) will give insights on research projects aimed at driving South Africa’s transition to a low-emissions economy, using equitable and well-managed methods, such as identifying opportunities to support SMMEs. Dr Zanele Ntshidi (32) will share her research on monitoring and modelling the water use of agricultural crops and forestry.

Media is invited as follows:

Date: Monday, 27 June 2022
Time: 10:00 – 11:00
