Media statement

The level of illiteracy remains a critical educational issue in South Africa. Many school learners face barriers to reading and learning because of factors such as visual impairment and dyslexia, among other many barriers to education.

On Wednesday, 11 May 2022, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will unveil a new innovative learning voice computing application (app) that translates text into audio, developed by CSIR researchers, named ‘ISinkwe’.

The technology was developed to empower non-readers to become readers by breaking down barriers to reading and learning. The user-friendly app helps learners to read and learn more effectively through a rich audio-visual experience in all official South African languages.

During the virtual media briefing, CSIR researchers will showcase how the technology can be used as an effective approach to early interventions targeting school learners.
