From 27 January to 01 February 2024, the CSIR biophotonics researchers showcased their expertise at the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) International Conference, presenting a remarkable total of 21 research papers. Their presentations covered a wide array of topics, ranging from photonics and imaging engineering to novel applications in biomedicine, delivering innovative insights.

The highlight of the conference came when Sipho Chauke, a PhD student from the team, was awarded the Best PhD Poster Presentation award for her work, titled, ‘Biosensing multidrug-resistant TB genes using SPR’ – a study that explored the use of optical techniques, such as Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), to detect drug-resistant Tuberculosis genes.

With a mix of excitement and gratitude, Sipho reflected on his achievement and exclaimed, "Winning this award is a testament to the dedication and support of my mentors and colleagues. It's a humbling experience to be recognised among such talented individuals in the field on an international stage."

Prof. Patience Mthunzi-Kufa, the research group leader of biophotonics, beamed with pride at the team's accomplishments. "The SPIE Conference provided a valuable platform for our researchers to showcase their work in biophotonics, network with international peers and participate in various programs created for the promotion of optics and photonics. Sipho's recognition highlights the calibre of talent within our team and reaffirms our commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery. This achievement is not just a personal triumph but a testament to the collective efforts of our dedicated researchers,” declared Patience.

The SPIE conference gathered global researchers and innovators who work in the light-based fields of physics in San Franciso, USA. SPIE is renowned for organising Photonics West, a premier event in the laser and photonics industry, known for being one of the largest combined conferences and tradeshows held annually in San Francisco.
