The CSIR uses specialised equipment and techniques in experiments to research the effects of blasts and explosive events. Extensive testing takes place at the CSIR’s detonics, ballistics and explosive laboratory, north of Pretoria. Focus areas are threat characterisation (from ballistics to landmines and improvised devices); surrogate development for parts to use in testing, and, ultimately developing protective technologies for soldiers and assets.
