International research shows that high crop loads are associated with high water demands. However, CSIR senior researcher Dr Sebinasi Dzikiti explains that no information currently exists on the water requirements of high-yielding apple orchards in South Africa and elsewhere. Thus, to support apple growers in a country saddled with water challenges, the CSIR has partnered with the Water Research Commission (WRC), the Agricultural Research Council, the South African Apple and Pear Producers Association represented by Hortgro Science, and the Universities of Stellenbosch and Pretoria to determine the water requirements of fruit trees with a particular focus on apple trees, from planting to full bearing age.
The community of Stinkwater has no access to piped water distributions and rely on water delivered by the municipal trucks. Often, this is not enough. Le Roux explains that the community has found its own solution to accessing water through hand dug wells. This untreated water is then used by the community, exposing them to various health risks.

On Wednesday, 25 and Thursday, 26 May 2022, the National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa (NCPC-SA) hosted its Fifth Biennial Industrial Efficiency Conference at the CSIR International Convention Center (ICC) where the CSIR’s Energy and Water Centres exhibited their technologies.
The Drakenstein Municipality, through its Water Services Development Master Plan, ensured that citizens had access to efficient, affordable, economical and sustainable water and sanitation services that promote improved livelihoods and economic development. These efforts were acknowledged through the city receiving Green Drop status from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) for its Hermon Wastewater Treatment System.
