Electronic monitoring system for the Department of Correctional Services (DCS)

South African prisons are overcrowded, and electronic monitoring is seen as a way of reducing incarceration and the costs of monitoring parolees and other tagged persons of interest. The CSIR is developing a solution comprising of custom electronic bracelets worn by offenders connecting to an IoT backend under a contract from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). The solution also integrates to the Offender Management Systems of the DCS and has a mobile application for community corrections officials to interact with and have situational awareness of those in their case load. This is only phase 1 of what is expected to be a multiphase project to develop the solution, adjunct devices, and supporting applications over the next few years.
