Energy industry

The CSIR`s work in this areas focuses on facilitating strategic dialogue on industrialisation in the energy sector in South Africa through development position papers and providing advice at national level. Econometric data on the developments in energy industries are being developed and maintained.

Industry business case research covers the entire value chain of the energy sector from technology components to project development and operations, as well as identifying and analysing economic development prospects across all technologies. Collection and analysis of primary data (import and export, equipment prices, supply and demand, jobs) about the South African (and global) markets provide a full-view perspective of developments in the industry.

Energy industry transition

Researchers in this field focus on the analysis of these impacts, for instance, the impact of the reduced reliance on coal on the mining sector or the economic spin-offs of increased uptake of electric vehicles. Analytical tools map-out the ideal end state of the envisaged energy industry transition.

Socio-economic development in the energy sector
