The National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa (NCPC-SA) hosts a colloquium on Friday, 2 September 2022 at the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens and online. The colloquium will unpack the progress made in South Africa and Africa on sustainable industrial development since the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) hosted in Joburg exactly 20 years ago this week. 

The Joburg WSSD resulted in numerous sustainable development commitments by South Africa, including the establishment of the NCPC-SA.

The NCPC-SA is an industrial support programme managed, for the past 20 years, by the Council for Scientific and industrial Research (CSIR). Funded by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), the NCPC-SA was set up in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) after the 2002 WSSD and has been driving the transition to a green economy in local industry ever since. 

Over the years, the sustainable development agenda has grown in scope and importance. This has had an impact on nationally determined contributions towards climate change mitigation and adaptation, and commitments to sustainable development and specifically in the context of economic growth, to a sustainable industry.

This begs certain questions around our sustainability status and progress as nation. The NCPC-SA Colloquium has gathered policy makers, business representatives, academics and CSIR Presidential climate change advisor to lead discussions in addressing these and other questions:

What progress has South Africa made since 2002? Are we on track in addressing environmental impact and industrial efficiency? What does this mean for companies, particularly considering looming carbon caps for exporters?    

The NCPC-SA panel will provide expert input that will assess the challenges, progress, and pitfalls for industry in tackling this game-changing issue.

The event takes place tomorrow at the National Botanical Gardens in Pretoria, and online via MS Teams, from 09:00 to 12:00 on Friday, 2 September.
