Maintenance of solar PV modules is performed by examining electroluminescence (EL) images by hand or using software.  As the solar PV industry grows, the number of EL images taken each day increases rapidly, making this process time consuming and costly. The system in development by CSIR enables automatic defect detection and classification of EL images, and can predict how cracks propagate and worsen over time.
