Having recognised the enabling role of product lifecycle management (PLM) technology for equipping industry in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIR/4IR), the Department of Trade and Industry supported the establishment of a new PLM technology centre at the CSIR, by making Siemens PLM software licenses available to the CSIR. This software will be used to support small, medium and micro enterprises.

Roads in Africa have often been challenging to travel on because of the different types of pavement failures. With the help of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research’s (CSIR) world-class bituminous binders laboratory, US-based science company, DuPont, is changing how roads are built in Africa with its DuPont™ Elvaloy® Reactive Elastomeric Terpolymers (RET) bitumen modifier technology. The tests conducted by the CSIR set the scene for the uptake of Elvaloy® RET and the advancement of bitumen specifications in Africa.

CSIR have found that renewable energy assisted in relieving pressure on the constrained South African power system during load shedding in the first quarter of 2019. With South Africa needing to resort to up to stage 4 load shedding in the first quarter of 2019 (Q1-2019), variable renewable energy (VRE) contributed valuable energy and assisted in avoiding further load shedding. The CSIR in partnership with the United Nations (UN) Women South Africa Multi-Country Office (SAMCO), is involved in an initiative to develop, strengthen and build the capacity of Women Business Enterprises (WBEs), which are led or owned by women, to participate in the agriculture and agro-processing, and construction sectors.

The Alliance for Collaboration on Climate and Earth Systems Science (ACCESS) programme at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in collaboration with the South African Weather Services (SAWS), will host the 37th Annual Conference of the South African Society for Atmospheric Sciences at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
