Project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to implement and scale circular solutions to plastic pollution in South Africa

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and WWF South Africa are spearheading a five-year project to support the development of circular plastic packaging and systems to reduce plastic pollution from the food and beverage industry.

It is widely acknowledged that plastic pollution is not only an environmental challenge, but it also includes socio-economic and potential human health and human rights challenges. Yet, while much of the attention has focused on improved waste management, this project will focus exclusively on upstream and midstream interventions in the plastic packaging value chain – looking at how to turn off the tap on problem plastics at source. CSIR and IIE sign a collaboration agreement focussed on skills development and innovation support initiatives leveraging the CSIR Learning Factory

The Independent Institute of Education Proprietary Limited (IIE) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an entity of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 13 October 2023, for purposes of collaboration in industry focussed skills development and innovation support initiatives leveraging from the CSIR Learning Factory.

A Learning Factory is a facility that aims to mimic a realistic working environment to provide future-focused education and training as well as fostering innovation.
