Two terabytes of genetic sequence data sent at high speed
The CSIR’s supercomputing experts supported a major African research institute in transferring vast amounts of genomic data to a Harvard University server in just 45 minutes – a task that would have originally taken over a month. The Africa Health Research Institute regularly relies on the team for support. Using 100 GB-per-second data transfer nodes based in Johannesburg, South African National Research Network completed the transfer in under an hour at a rate of eight GB per second.
Second place for South African students in international supercomputing competition
The 2025 Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) team achieved second place overall in the online component of the international Student Cluster Competition, held during the ISC25 Conference in Hamburg, Germany. Competing against 21 university teams across the globe, the CHPC team upheld the centre’s track record on the high-performance computing stage. The team comprised four students from Cape Peninsula University of Technology, one from the University of the Western Cape and one from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Our research and development
National Integrated Cyber Infrastructure System
We advance high-performance computing in South Africa as part of a national initiative of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation. We promote scientific and industrial development by providing high-performance computing capability, high-speed network capacity and a national research data infrastructure that is hierarchically integrated into globally connected systems and local systems, ensuring seamless access for South Africa's research and education communities.
