The CSIR offers a range of specialised, science and technology-based services directly to industry and other sectors. Such services include analytical testing in accredited laboratories, strategic environmental services, wire rope testing, mechanical testing and others. The organisation undertakes these services on a paid-for basis as an independent service provider.

The CSIR’s Kloppersbos facility supports safer work in fire- and explosion-prone industries through full-scale testing of suppression systems, flammable materials, and dust controls. Its unique size enables large coal dust/methane explosion demos, ideal for training underground workers.

Mechanical Testing Laboratory: Work with us
Mechanical Testing Laboratory
The CSIR mechanical testing laboratory has been at the forefront of large-scale mechanical testing since 1935. Established to promote mineworker safety, the facility houses two of the country’s largest mechanical testing machines, capable of testing heavy-load specimens such as mine support structures, hoisting equipment and lifting gear.

Our internationally recognised steel wire rope testing laboratory supports the mining industry by evaluating new and in-service steel wire ropes. The laboratory assesses their strength and condition to determine whether they meet safety standard.

Self-contained Self-rescuers: Work with us
Self-contained Self-rescuers
The CSIR Self-contained Self-rescuer Testing Lab is South Africa’s only accredited authority ensuring the safety of over 200,000 oxygen devices used by mineworkers during underground fires or explosions. Established in 1996, the monitoring programme tests 2,000+ devices yearly across 180+ mines to detect performance deterioration.
