Africa’s first state of waste management report to be released

The United Nations Environment Programme and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), will launch Africa’s first consolidated waste management outlook, which seeks to address the impact of mismanaged waste on the continent.

Current poor waste management practices are causing negative impact on the economy, society and environment in Africa.  

The United Nations Environment Programme and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), will launch Africa’s first consolidated waste management outlook, which seeks to address the impact of mismanaged waste on the continent.

The launch will be held on 5 June 2018, World Environment Day, during the Sustainability Week in Pretoria.  The regional outlook is the latest in a series of international waste management outlooks, which began with the Global Waste Management Outlook in 2015.

The consolidated waste management outlook publication is the result of contributions by experts and researchers from across the African continent, and provides an analysis of the state of waste management in Africa, its impact on the continent and proposed solutions for improved waste management in the region.

Chapters include:

  • Waste governance
  • Quantifying the environmental impacts of poor waste management
  • Waste as a resource: Unlocking opportunities for Africa
  • Appropriate solutions for Africa and
  • Financing waste management.

The launch will be followed by a workshop by Plastics SA and the United Nations Environment Programme on how to beat plastic pollution at the same venue.
