Guidelines and product category rules (PCRs) to enable and expedite the application of Life Cyle Assessment under the EPR Regulations in South Africa

Project Status:
Ongoing

This project aims to develop a guideline providing clear guidance to South African producers on conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in an effective, practical and consistent way to meet the requirements of both the EU market and the South African Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations.

The aim is to provide clarity and direction to producers regarding the requirements, thereby reducing costs and confusion and enabling both the EU market and SA regulatory requirements to be met in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

The project will also provide recommendations on appropriately using available product category rules (PCRs) where applicable and incorporating South African-relevant end-of-life models for different waste streams.

The CSIR is implementing the project in partnership with the University of Cape Town (UCT) and The Green House, with funding from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the DTIC, through NCPC-SA) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI, through the Waste RDI Roadmap).
