Koen leads a team of statisticians who specialise in the collection, assessment and analysis of scientific data for the improvement of knowledge and decision-making. The team has a successful track record in providing statistical support on a range of research projects in different domains. Such statistical support includes advice on the processes involved in collecting scientific data, in the assessment and extraction of relevant information from scientific data, and in the analysis, modelling and forecasting of scientific data to extract conclusions and make decisions. Koen specialises in data collection methods, as well as in the application of certain multivariate and multi-criteria summary and analysis methods.

Koen holds post-graduate qualifications in statistics and operations research, and has been involved in quantitative modelling and analysis across a range of domains.  She has been at the CSIR since 2002, working on projects in energy, the criminal justice system, education and the medical field. Within statistics, her areas of specialisation include data collection methods, in particular questionnaire design, as well as the selection of appropriate multivariate analysis methods, while within operations research she focuses on problem formulation and multi-criteria decision analysis.
