Strategic infrastructure management

The management of immovable infrastructure assets is critical to ensuring that they are maintained and operated in such a way that they remain fit for purpose throughout their service lifecycle.

The strategic infrastructure management  group assists with the planning, operating and maintenance of infrastructure services. Government at various levels is often constrained in its ability to meet the demands of infrastructure asset management, as a result of insufficient human resources capacity and capability, as well as appropriate technologies, mechanisms and processes.

The CSIR has been working in strategic infrastructure management since 2004, providing asset management support and implementing strategic initiatives across all three spheres of government (national, provincial and local) and the private sector within South Africa.

The group’s focus is on providing a platform for the sustainable and innovative management of all infrastructure, through the application of science, technology, innovation and facilitation of learning opportunities (capacitation). Performance assessment of infrastructure asset management allows for the understanding of entities’ assets and its performance status, and the establishment or update of an immovable asset register.
