“A ten-year showcase of waste research, development and innovation in South Africa”
South Africa’s Waste Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) Roadmap is a 10-year national strategy led by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). Implemented in 2015, the roadmap set out to guide public and private sector investment in waste RD&I, strengthen related capacity and support the diversion of waste away from landfill, towards reuse, recycling and recovery.
The roadmap focused specifically on unlocking high-value end uses for five priority waste streams. Over the 10-years of implementation (2015 – 2024), the roadmap provided catalytic funding to 59 grant projects hosted at 17 different universities and science councils across South Africa and supported the successful completion and graduation of 86 post-graduate students, with a number of additional students in the final stages of completion.
This webinar presents an opportunity to reflect on the outcomes and impact of the Waste Roadmap and on the fundamental role the DSTI has played in supporting South Africa’s waste sector through the investment RD&I. It also serves as an ideal take-off platform for government’s new Circular Economy Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy (2025 – 2035), into which the Waste RDI Roadmap has now merged.
