Background

The CSIR Soccer Club was founded to bring colleagues together through the spirit of sport, teamwork and camaraderie. Built on the organisation’s core values, the club strives for excellence on and off the field, fostering a culture where every member is supported and encouraged to grow. Our club is represented by five committee members and guided by the club constitution. We deliver memorable experiences on the field that contribute to the personal and professional development of our members, making a tangible impact on the wider community.

What we do
  • We are proudly competing in the Pretoria Corporate League.
  • We are people-centred, creating an inclusive space that promotes wellness, unity, and commitment to giving back through charitable initiatives that support those in need.
  • Players are supported in refining their skills while coaches and committee members are empowered to grow as leaders.
Our facilities

The CSIR soccer field is located within the sport and recreation site of the CSIR and provides a safe environment for teams, also offering changerooms and showering facilities.

CSIR Squash Club

Join Squash Club
Background

The CSIR Squash Club was established over 45 years ago and continues to provide budding squash players with the opportunity to excel at both provincial and national level, competing in the Northerns Squash League, fielding 10 League Sides. We have at least 10-15 provincial players at any given time, as well as a few who play at both a national and international level.

What we do
  • We are a club of choice for staff of the CSIR as well as the surrounding areas.
  • We provide coaching every second Saturday for both junior and senior players at no additional cost.
  • We provide an area outside of the courts for socialising.
Our facilities

The CSIR Squash Club is located within the sport and recreation site of the CSIR and provides a safe environment for families to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings with four courts, of which two are glass-backed, and showering facilities.

CSIR Tennis Club

Join Tennis Club
Background

The CSIR Tennis Club started with two courts in the 1960s; eventually, additional courts were added. In the 1990s, the CSIR Tennis Club became affiliated with the official provincial and national tennis associations.

What we do
  • We play the sport that is considered the healthiest in the world – a sport for life.
  • We are a social club that caters to all players, from total beginners to very accomplished players of all ages.
  • We welcome visitors.
  • We have social play every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon from approximately 14:00.
Our facilities

The CSIR tennis courts are located within the sport and recreation site of the CSIR and provide a safe environment for teams, offering bathrooms with six courts, all equipped with floodlights, along with a small kitchen, lapa, and braai area.

Join us

We host social play every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon from approximately 14:00 until late. Members also have the option to participate in provincial league matches, club championships, tournaments and special social events.

Background

The CSIR Table Tennis club is the flagship and anchor of Gauteng North Table Tennis. We strive to be recognised nationally as a welcoming Table Tennis Club for players of all ages and abilities, and to provide our members with the platform to excel in the sport.

What we do
  • We are a playing hub for players in Gauteng North, boasting safe training facilities within the CSIR campus, coupled with beautiful views and nature.
  • We host regular training events for players, umpires and coaches, as well as hosting championships at a club and regional level.

The CSIR table tennis hall is located within the sport and recreation site of the CSIR, offering two world-class table tennis indoor facilities with bathrooms.

CSIR Volleyball Club

Join Volleyball Club
Background

The CSIR Volleyball Club was formed in 1991 and has been going for 34 years, with a hiatus from March 2020 to August 2022. The focus of the volleyball club has always been on having a social sport where all players, from novice to experienced, could participate. As volleyball is a team sport, it is ideal for building social cohesion. Membership is open to any CSIR staff member and external members, either individuals or companies. The club relies on its membership as volunteers to run the club activities, and coordinate leagues and tournaments. The current membership stands at 60.

What we do
  • We have fun in the sun.
  • We have a weekly coaching session for skills development from novice to more experienced players.
Club activities
  • Four-a-side beach volleyball leagues annually from February to June and August to November on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.
  • ‘Pitch n play’ sessions: Skills coaching on Monday afternoons and Saturday mornings for game practice.
  • More women are encouraged to play, and the pitch n play sessions encourage all novices and experienced players.
  • Tournaments: At least four tournaments per annum for members.
  • We have a Youth Outreach Annual Development Clinic where neighbouring schools in Pretoria participate and provide skills training.

CSIR Hiking Club

Background

The CSIR Hiking and Trail club was launched on the 3rd of June 2023, and the goal of the club is to promote an active lifestyle to enhance the health and wellbeing of CSIR employees and their families.

What we do
  • We provide an opportunity for the members to explore and enjoy the natural beauty of our country.
  • We serve as a forum where members can engage, get to know each other outside the workplace and promote our EPIC values.

The CSIR Hiking Club coordinates hikes in Gauteng, the Western Cape, and other provinces.

CSIR Running Club

Background

The CSIR Running Club was founded more than 30 years ago with the objective of fostering, developing and promoting running and walking in the CSIR and surrounding areas to enhance the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of our members. Secondly, the running club organises, promotes and supports running and walking events at both recreational and competitive levels. The running club is affiliated to Athletics Gauteng North (AGN), which includes road running, road walking, track and field and cross-country events; and by association, the governing body Athletics South Africa (ASA).

What we do
  • We provide members access to the CSIR main campus to train.
  • We provide safe routes on campus, and it feels as if you are running in a nature reserve.
  • We provide full members with a permanent ASA licence.
  • We provide race support for members at monthly AGN league races, where food and refreshments are served after the race.
  • We provide members the opportunity to participate in weekly time trials every Tuesday afternoon starting at 17:15 in winter and 17:30 in summer.
  • We offer routes of 8.6 km, 6 km and 4 km time trials.
  • We cater for all fitness levels, whether you are a fast competitor or just want to enjoy a walk with running friends.
  • We organise a few social events throughout the year, including a Valentine’s time trial, Comrades soup & sherry, Comrades aches & pains and a springtime trial.
  • We host the CSIR Race annually in partnership with CSIR Wellness.
  • We host an annual general meeting, where we celebrate the achievements of the past year.
Our facilities

The CSIR Club members enjoy running on the beautiful CSIR campus in Pretoria with social events held either on the CSIR Sport and Recreation site at the lapa or in the Tarentaal venue.

iii. CSIR Access Card form (If not a CSIR employee)

v. Pay a membership fee and provide the proof of payment to the club secretary

Who can join

Eligible to any persons who meet membership requirements, be it CSIR staff members or non-CSIR employees (external members).

Most clubs require a completed membership registration form, supporting documents, and proof of payment before your membership can be processed.

Facility booking and rental:

CSIR sports facilities may be booked or rented for approved sporting events, training sessions, tournaments, and club activities. Please complete the booking request form in advance to secure availability.

  • Submit booking requests in advance 7 to 14 days prior to event date
  • Requests for bookings of more 200 people should be submitted at least one month prior to the event date
  • Bookings are subject to availability and capacity
  • Rental terms and conditions apply to all areas
