Advanced casting technologies

The main focus of the group is in the field of casting technologies, specifically investment casting, semi-solid metal forming and high-pressure die casting.

Although this group was only established in 2006, the CSIR’s advanced materials engineering group has been involved in casting technologies for the past three decades. In the past, the focus was on investment casting of high-temperature alloys for gas turbine applications, specifically, nickel and cobalt-based super-alloys, including the capability to produce directionally solidified and single-crystal turbine blades.

In the past decade, the research focus has shifted to light metals technologies, which encompasses aluminium, titanium and magnesium, although the capabilities to research other metal platforms still exist.
