Media advisory

Members of the media are invited to a media briefing to unpack 5th generation (5G) technology standards and opportunities for industrialisation, as well as growing concerns raised by social media regarding 5G and human health. The virtual media briefing is scheduled to take place on Monday, 8 February 2021.

Over the years, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has undertaken directed research on 5G technologies. Researchers from the CSIR will share their research on different radio frequencies and human tissue, as well as epidemiological evidence of the effects of current mobile phone networks.

CSIR chief researcher, Dr Fisseha Mekuria, will give a technical background on the emerging 5G mobile network technology opportunities for South Africa and dispel some myths about 5G technologies. It is alleged that 5G technologies cause several health effects, including the spread and mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. CSIR senior researcher, Dr Essa Suleman, will unpack some of the alleged health effects, including the spread and mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Covid-19 vaccines and whether or not there can be a link between these and 5G mobile technologies.

Media is invited to the briefing as follow:
