From a rural village in the Eastern Cape to the forefront of digital innovation at the CSIR, Zandile Myendeki is helping shape technologies that contribute to a safer and more transparent digital future for South Africa. This Youth Month and beyond, we recognise Zandile as a phenomenal member of #TeamCSIR who is building a career dedicated to research, innovation and digital transformation.
As South Africa celebrates Youth Month, Zandile's journey reflects the power of education, perseverance and innovation to transform lives and communities. Since joining the CSIR in 2022 as part of the Emerging Digital Technologies for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Distributed Ledger Technology team, she has contributed to research and development initiatives that harness emerging technologies to address real-world challenges.
Growing up in a rural community in the Eastern Cape, Zandile experienced the realities of limited access to technology. Yet, rather than suppressing her curiosity, these circumstances strengthened it. She became fascinated by how technology could connect people, solve problems and create opportunities where they previously did not exist. That curiosity eventually led her to pursue studies in computer science and build a career dedicated to research, innovation and digital transformation.
Her academic journey was marked by the same determination that continues to drive her daily work. Through university projects, collaborative learning experiences and exposure to emerging technologies, she developed strong analytical and problem-solving skills. More importantly, she discovered that technology is most valuable when used to improve lives and address societal challenges.
This realisation inspired her to pursue a career in research and innovation, ultimately leading her to the CSIR, an organisation whose mission aligned with her desire to contribute to South Africa's development through science and technology.
At the CSIR, Zandile has developed expertise in emerging digital technologies, contributing to projects that translate complex research into practical solutions. Among her most notable contributions, is her work on the eXochain tool, a blockchain intelligence platform designed to trace and analyse blockchain transactions.
As digital financial systems become increasingly integrated into everyday life, tools such as eXochain play an important role in supporting transparency, accountability and informed decision-making. The platform transforms vast amounts of complex blockchain data into meaningful insights, supporting investigations and enabling organisations to better understand transaction flows and patterns within digital ecosystems.
For Zandile, the project demonstrated the value of combining research, technical expertise and collaboration to address contemporary challenges. It also highlighted the growing importance of specialised skills in areas such as blockchain technologies, data analysis and digital innovation – capabilities that are increasingly essential as South Africa navigates the opportunities and challenges of the fourth industrial revolution.
"Working on projects that have the potential to make a real difference has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey," says Zandile. "It has shown me that innovation is not only about developing new technologies but also about creating solutions that can positively impact society. Every challenge presents an opportunity to learn, grow and contribute to something bigger than yourself."
Reflecting on her journey, she credits continuous learning, adaptability and collaboration as the foundations of her growth. Working alongside experienced researchers and innovators has strengthened her technical expertise and her understanding of how research can contribute to economic development, social progress and national priorities.
As South Africa looks to the next generation of scientists, researchers and innovators, Zandile believes young people have a critical role to play in shaping the country's future.
"Stay curious, believe in your abilities and never stop learning," she says. Do not be afraid of challenges; they are often the moments that help you grow the most."
