Shigamani Village in Malamulele, Limpopo, with its 15 000 residents and sporadic internet access, Ntshuxeko Makondo set out to make a name for himself, first snatching up the best student awards in a couple of categories during his studies and then carving out a career in advanced network technologies, artificial intelligence-driven systems, cybersecurity and next-generation communication networks at the CSIR. Ntshuu, as he is fondly known, is well on his way to saying that he contributed to a smarter, more connected future. This Youth Month and beyond, we recognise Ntshuu as a phenomenal member of #TeamCSIR who is applying his skills to solve real-world problems and bringing innovation to the fore.
Ntshuu completed a master’s degree in computing (Information Technology) at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in 2024 where his research focused on developing a latency optimisation model for 5G-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) applications in smart farming. The study integrated technologies such as software-defined networking (SDN), edge computing, and cloud computing, and to improve communication efficiency, minimise latency and strengthen real-time processing within smart agriculture.
The multidisciplinary research reflects the growing role of emerging technologies in addressing critical societal and industrial challenges, particularly within Africa’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
Ntshuu joined the CSIR in March 2023 through a master’s studentship programme and, following the completion of the degree in October 2024, was appointed as a junior researcher and engineer specialising in SDN, SD-WAN and emerging digital technologies. Currently, Ntshuu conducts research on cloud-to-edge systems, intelligent communication, cybersecurity, 5G, artificial intelligence-driven networking, IoT systems and Low Earth Orbit communication technologies.
A significant milestone in Ntshuu’s journey was his recent promotion to researcher, recognising contributions made towards research, innovation, technical publications and technology development initiatives within the organisation. The achievement reflects both professional growth and a commitment to advancing impactful research within cutting-edge digital technologies. “My journey at the CSIR has been exciting, transformative, and highly rewarding. The environment has exposed me to multidisciplinary collaboration, advanced research methodologies, an innovation-driven culture and practical problem-solving within both the public and private sectors. The exposure to cutting-edge technologies, collaborative research, and impactful projects has played a significant role in shaping my professional growth and strengthening my passion for research, innovation, and technology development,” says Ntshuu.
Ntshuu’s research contributions have already gained international recognition. One of the major academic milestones was the publication of his master’s research findings in the prestigious IEEE Access journal, highlighting the impact and relevance of advanced networking and intelligent communication systems. The young researcher has also represented South African innovation on international platforms, presenting research papers at conferences in Kenya in 2023 and Mauritius in 2024. These opportunities provided valuable engagement with global researchers and exposure to emerging trends in advanced networking, cloud systems, cybersecurity and intelligent communication technologies.
Throughout his academic and professional journey, Ntshuu has received several accolades for research excellence and innovation, including nomination for the CSIR 2024 Best Master’s Student Award, Department of IT Best Researcher of the Year awards in 2023 and 2024 at TUT, Faculty of ICT Best Research Poster of the Year awards in both 2023 and 2024, as well as recognition for excellence in research presentations within the Department of IT/Computer Systems Engineering.
Looking ahead, Ntshuu plans to continue pursuing research through a PhD focused on advanced networking technologies, cybersecurity, cloud and edge computing, artificial intelligence-driven networking and secure communication systems, while also contributing towards innovative African technology solutions that address real-world societal and industrial challenges.
Beyond research and innovation, Ntshuu is passionate about inspiring the next generation of young scientists, engineers and innovators to pursue careers in technology and research, reinforcing the important role young people continue to play in building Africa’s future knowledge economy.
