Modelling and simulation
We complete trade studies of concepts tested in operational scenarios by obtaining well-justified starting points for a solution architecture, configuration and layout. We have developed mission simulation codes for acquisition support, tactics development and training. This includes mission-level simulations for combat scenarios to model aircraft capabilities in operational and threat environments. We have also developed unmanned aerial vehicle and aircraft flight dynamics modelling, system identification, guidance and control and automation simulation tools.

Highlights
Our research
The CSIR develops robust mission-level simulations for combat scenarios, modelling aircraft capabilities in the relevant operational and threat environment. These include air-to-air and air-to-ground mission simulations, multiple air and ground threat scenario simulations, parametric modelling of fixed- and rotary-wing flight models, as well as the modelling of various aircraft stores.
The SAAF utilises this capability to achieve an improved understanding of the mission environment necessary to develop and evaluate tactics against new threat scenarios. The SAAF used the CSIR-developed mission planning tool, based on the mission simulation system, to develop its doctrine and tactics, as well as to perform mission planning for the Gripen in preparation for the Soccer World Cup in South Africa in 2010.
