Highlights

Our capabilities

As part of our cybersecurity capability, we perform desktop exercises such as penetration testing and vulnerability assessments. Our experts have access to a cybersecurity and ransomware laboratory, as well as a dark-web laboratory, which is used for research and development. Our research has also led to the development of novel technologies such as a cyber early warning system, a virtual cyber range used for product testing and training and a honeynet, which is used to study and analyse cyberattacks, attacker behaviour and network vulnerabilities.

Cybercrime investigation

Through our dedicated research on trends related to cyberattacks and common cybercrime scams and tactics, our team is able to stay abreast of the latest developments and provide support through digital forensics, open-source intelligence and blockchain research. We have developed a number of investigative procedures. We focus on developing technologies and solutions to combat cybercrime, including digital forensics and cybercrime analysis platforms. We are increasingly involved in cryptocurrency research and investigations into scams. We are working with the South African Police Service to establish a central cybercrimes and digital forensics investigative capability as a Cybercrimes Designated Point of Contact to support national investigations related to cybercrimes.

Information warfare

Appointed by the Department of Defence as Information Security Defence Evaluation and Research Institute, we have many years of experience in information warfare research at the level of national security.

Our research

Our work primarily focuses on combatting cybercrime and preventing cyberattacks, as well as performing research into information warfare techniques and fostering cybersecurity awareness through awareness and training campaigns. We also develop software systems as custom, fit-for-purpose tools for clients in government and private industry.

Cybersecurity laboratory

Our cutting-edge cybersecurity laboratory enables us to conduct research on a wide range of security topics such as malware behaviour, dark web activities, the generation and dissemination tactics behind misinformation and disinformation campaigns and open-source intelligence gathering. Our laboratory is also used to test novel security concepts and develop home-grown solutions to bolster the country’s cybersecurity posture.
