We undertake research and development in identity management. We develop technologies used to authorise a myriad of socioeconomic transactions and authenticate individuals’ identities throughout their lifespan. We contribute to the ongoing development of self-sovereign identity in the country to improve service delivery, reduce fraud and corruption and enhance resource utilisation.

ID systems go mobile
The CSIR has developed a contactless fingerprint recognition software solution that enables any digital device such as a smartphone or webcam to function as a fingerprint scanner without embedded scanners. This enables access control or identity verification on the go and offers systems and database interoperability. The technology has been licensed to numerous commercial partners, with more licenses available. To date, it has been used for authentication during delivery services, patient identification at accident scenes and the identification of arrested criminals. It is also suitable for applications in logistics, finance, health, security and education.

Identification of minors: Biometrics from the cradle to the grave
Infant biometric information presents challenges as children grow to adulthood, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and creating safety risks. We have developed a multi-modal technology that can uniquely identify or verify children from the day of birth by comparing and analysing their fingerprints, ear shape and iris features. The technology mitigates risks such as trafficking, identity theft and identity fraud. It also assists in locating lost or missing children and supports improved healthcare and administrative services, such as school enrolment.
