The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will be participating in the Manufacturing Indaba on 21 and 22 June 2022 at the Sandton Convention Centre to show how it is supporting local industries to entrench digital transformation and exploit 4IR technologies such as robotics, additive manufacturing, augmented reality and the application of smart sensors and photonics in areas such as health, materials engineering and parts refurbishment.

With the significant uptake of photonics-based technologies by industry, the CSIR Photonics Centre will showcase its novel smartphone-based photonic disease screening device alongside their metal and titanium 3D printing technology solutions. The application of photonics technologies in recent years has revolutionised fields such as health, ICT and a broad range of laser-based welding and production technologies.

As part of CSIR’s industry relevant exhibition, South Africa’s first locally developed and digitally engineered Covid-19 ventilator system will also feature among other technologies.

In addition to technology exhibitions, CSIR representatives will be taking part as session speakers and panellists on topics ranging from digital manufacturing to future production in mining, economic outlooks in the manufacturing sector and ways of mobilising greater workforces for the future through skills development. They are:

Dr Ajith Gopal, Executive Cluster Manager for Future Production: Manufacturing will be a panellist on digital innovation and its role in building globally competitive manufacturing companies.

Ms Sibongile Ntsoelengoe, Executive Cluster Manager for Future Production: Mining will be a session moderator on the topic of interfacing between mining and manufacturing and developing a shared perspective for industrialisation across the production value chain.

Ms Marie Botha, Manager of Industry Connect and Manager of the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative was invited as moderator to a session on economic recovery and opportunities for public and private sector financing of the industrial economy.

The CSIR supports the digital transformation and reindustrialisation of South African industries through the development of manufacturing processes and equipment; implementation of end-to-end digital engineering and logistics; the provision of industrial services (such as prototyping or testing) and new product development and localisation.
